Dublin, Manchester City Official Supporters Club.

Last Tuesday I went along to the Dublin branch of the Manchester City (O.S.C.) The official supporters club. It was my first time so I had no clue as what to except. The meetings are held in Chaplin’s Bar in Hawkins Street in the City centre every 3 weeks or so. Having gone to the meeting I have to say what a great bunch of lads.

Dublin O.S.C. is the first supporter’s club to be featured in the all new Topical City online magazine. Once a month it will feature a Supports club from around the word with a piece on their History, Events, and of course how to get in touch and be involved. This is part of a global push to get City supporters together and hopefully create more of a world wide fan base.

Issue one is now online at www.topicalcity.co.uk and a great read.

The second Issue is Due on Monday the 7 th of February and will feature the full story of the Dublin Branch and hopefully a few pictures of the Dublin lads.

The Dublin branch are celebrating 35 years this year and the story is a remarkable one. If you had to sum up the members of the club in one word it would have to be  ”Dedication ”

Like many others, I have travelled over and back to Manchester for the last 4 years now as a season ticket holder and even times on my own. Talking to the clubs Chairman Andy Grant and the Treasurer Joe Trainer on Tuesday one thing they said really struck a cord “You never have to be alone”.

Travelling with like minded City fans can be a new adventure and some great laughs along the way.

The Supporters also hold events to get all the family invoved ,with other branchs form the U.K. travelling to Dublin to join in the fun.

If your a City fan living in Dublin and like top socilize and be more involved with the club get in touch with the Dublin Man City O.S.C.

Next meeting is in Chaplin’s Bar, Hawkins Street, Dublin2 at 8.30 pm on Monday the 17 th of January 2011.

Chairman : Andy Grant
Treasurer : Joe Traynor
Secretary : Noel O’Connor
Asst. Secretary : Ron Hogan
Travel Secretary : John Morriarty

  2. “A World Wide Fan Base” ok, correct me if i’m wrong. I thought Manchester City’s pride them self on being LOCAL?! The chants of “We support our local team” always heard at Eastlands…

  4. That they do, however their are true supporters all over the world that can say they were there in the hard times. Unlike untied who have a world wide fan base of glory hunting fans who in fairness couldn’t name one of the starting 11. These fans however do buy the shirts ect, which in return brings a profit to the club, unless your club is run by mindless yanks and after all that your club (untied) are still in debt.

  6. I’m a little puzzled as to why Manchester United crept into our conversation however i’m willing to co-operate. You state United’s International fanbase could not name a starting 11, what facts do you base that theory on? Indeed, United DO have worldwide fan base but how do you prove that the millions of fans are all Glory Hunters? Have you ever took into account that some of them may have been born into a Manchester United Fan family? You are right, the fans from other countrys who buy United’s Mechandise do bring massive profit to the club. I am from Dublin myself hence i found your article in Google search engine when looking for flights to and from Dublin and my curiosity got the better of me so I had a read of your article. I AM a football fan but not how you know it, Gaelic Football, so no my team are not run by “Mindless Yanks” and are not in debt. The players I support play for the love of their chosen sport and not for the love of money unlike some so called “sportsmen” I see who hand in transfer requests when their directors don’t live up to their expectations. Funny you mentioned fans all over the world being there during hard times. My friend who is part of a Dublin based Manchester United Supporters Club has been attending Manchester United games since 1984 every week. If my memory serves me correctly Sir Alex took over in 1986 and he did not win silverware until 1990. Hence 1986 – 1990 hard times. So you are right, they are fans out there who have been there during the hard times! I’m curious, does your visits to my home city now mean that the irish following on match days at Eastlands will still be sing “WE SUPPORT OUR LOCAL TEAM” because surley if that was the case they should be in the stadium I visit every other week….

  8. Jesus really, you went through all that for ?? If you like Gaa fair play me I don’t go for it myself at all. Most of my friends are either Liverpool or Untied the simple fact is that are teams in the past that have both won and both had thief share of Irish players play for them. If you want to bang on and on fine. The article above is for Manchester City fans living in Dublin. By the way you write it would strongly indicate that you are indeed a Untied fan. It’s ok your not tue first and won’t be the last to pretend to come on a blog and try and make a point from a neutral point of view ! It’s a very common thing. As for a world wide fan base your problem would be ? That Little old city have not got the right to export the brand ? As for Gaa there is no money worries well it’s simple, let me put you right on it as your home town is Manchester and you are so willing to set me straight. The population of Ireland is approx 5 million with the rise of soccer many like myself don’t care for Gaa and a lot of others don’t care for any sport so that leaves you with counties of Mayo, limerick , and Sligo which have the population of Tallaght in the whole county !! Which means there is sweet f@@k all money to keep it running never mind pay the players. If money Did money did come into and belive me the players would love that it would be ruined. What do the players take from it ? Glory and going around the schools giving speeches fair play to them it’s the chosen sport they love. Problem with that is soccer is becoming more popular than ever with the kids and long gone are the days of the Christian brothers and local parish priest making young lads choose between the two. As for the glory hunter I can only go on a lot of the fans of both untied in the nineties and Liverpool in the eighties (my generation) and tell you most support their chosen teams because they were winning and it’s that simple. I go the as many home games at C.O.M.S. and can say your local team is fast becoming gobal. It will still always have it’s local support of the people of Manchester no matter what happens.

  10. I’m sorry to dissapoint you but on this occasion you do not have a United fan pretending to be a neutral just to get a point across however as a Sky Sports subscriber I do keep an eye on The English Premier Leage and The good old Sky Sports News at what’s happening in England. My friend – I can assure you my love for Dublin did not stem from any influance from my “Christian Brothers” nor my “local Parish Priest ” My Father prefers Hurling and my passion stemed from playing my chosen sport with like-minded friends in my youth.
Since you asked my view on Sport differs from yours as I belive money is ruining sport and I follow the sport I do as I feel these athletes are in it for the love of the game and yes, the “Glory” as you put it. Thank God my chosen Sport hasn’t been saturated with money, and for someone who doesn’t care much for Gaelic Football I find your view of “If money did come into it, the players would love it” as narrow minded and typical of a fan of a rich soccer club! I put to you – I’m sure you love your big players? Do they love you? Do they socialise with fans in a bar after a game? Do they sit and have time to chat with fans after a game? (And I’m not talking Excecutive Season Ticket Holders who sit in the player’s lounge at full time to grab a few autographs and have their picture took with thier so called “Hero”) I doubt it very much so from any English Premier League Club. I have no problem with any Soccer team having a World wide fan base nor exporting their brand. My wife’s family live in New York to which I visit once a year and I seen on many occasion both like-minded Manchester United, Manchester City, Liverpool and Arsenal supporters meet up in Times Square bars to support their teams, so again I have no problem with that. Yes United and Liverpool have had their far share of Irish players. As for glory hunters United big succsess come in the 90′s yet where having big attendances since the late 40′s. Did this then mean that local Manchester United fans became City fans instead during Fergie’s reign? My orginal point was now you are becoming global will the chants of “We support our local team” be still heard around your stadium?

  11. Brian on Thu, 20th Jan 2011 7:25 pm
  12. You don’t half bang on, I have had the chance to meet a fair few of the City players and have photos to back it up, all had time to stop chat and have photos taken. The answer in my experience of these players is yes a lot of them do have time for fans. Richard Dunne who I have pleasure of meeting and drink with in the radisson manchester is a shining example of this not only did He his girlfriend join us for drinks he bought a round and stayed for a session !! He has been seen countless times in his home town of Tallaght with the kids from the local side for hours on end !! I also know that certain members of the Dublin team who frequent The Bell pub in Blanch like to sniff coke, in fact I’m sure young Bonner of Bridgits and Dublin was stopped in a car and prosecuted for it. Shining example to the youth or the northern lads convicted of dog fighting so if these are some of the lads you wish to have a drink with after your chosen sport very nice I’m sure if you know your Gaa as you claim that i could go on all day of players that have criminal convictions for assault drug dealing and of course that fair sport of dog fighting !! Maybe if there was more money in the sport this could be avoided. Of course I am joking and am well aware these lads are a small minority but it goes to show what sort players are in the Gaa so don’t try the moral local sport and local heroes crap with me. There are fine examples of professional players in every club who do have time for the fans as there is players who couldn’t give a toss. It’s in Gaa as much as it is soccer. As for the chants of local team they have the right as Manchester City are the local team as Untied are from the swamp.

  14. P.s
I have supported City since 89/90 season when my boyhood hero and true gentleman signed ,I can say that because i have had the pleasure of meeting him on more than one occasion his name is of course Niall Quinn. That and while visiting family in moss side I was taken to Maine Road to see City so I never looked back.
City were a big money team back then ? Were they ? Supported them when in the third tier of English football and support them now that they are a big money team !! I glad you feel a sense of superiority because of you chosen sport but fact is, your on a Man City blog so what did you except ?

  16. I’m a guy from Dublin on a City blog commenting on a Dublin topic actually. It’s a tad unfair of you to accuse a reader of your Blog to be “Banging on about it” when Blogs are open for discussion! If this blog is ONLY for Manchester City fans and not open to neutrals I apologise for opening a discussion with you on your Blog because it appears to have made you SLIGHTLY angry, I promise I will not open a discussion on here again after this one. You however did answer your own argument there and took the words right out of my mouth. You are right in saying “Maybe if there was more money in my chosen sport these crimes could be avoided.” And on that note I will not open a discussion on the perfect example Joey Barton has set over the years….. Indeed there are both good and bad in every sport as you put it however you say “them sort of players are in the GAA so don’t try the moral local sport and local heroes crap with me” are you implying that all GAA players are thugs? I’m a little lost as you seem to contradict yourself one sentence after another, one minute “There are fine examples of professional players in every club ” the next “them sort players are in the GAA so don’t try the moral local sport and local heroes crap with me”
I am also glad you too feel a sense of superiority because you “supported City since 89/90 season” but the fact is there are also fans from Manchester United or Untied as you put it (Sorry wasn’t sure if it was a spelling mistake or a jibe I am not familiar with yet) who do also have fans from Old Trafford and Manchester who do not sing “We support our local team” because they have an International fan base. I’m sure if you are exporting the City brand to my Neck Of The Woods and World Wide surely your fans should NOT be singing “We support Our Local Team” and the “Local” tag should be a thing of the past?! Yes, I’m sure you will always have a local following however chanting at games is “everybody as one” or “The 12th man” as it’s put these days, or I like to think so…. Putting childish name calling aside have you ever took into account how it may make your Manchester City supporters feel whose hometown is Old Trafford referring to their town as a “Swamp”?! Of course they will never ever have anything nice to say about Manchester United but I’m not sure they would appreciate having their home town referred to as a “Swamp” On the subject of locality, remember “locality” – do the “local” Manchester City supporters come from JUST districts of Manchester? I.E Moss Side, Newton Heath, Moston or do you have supporters from The Metropolitan Boroughs of Greater Manchester like Stockport, Middleton Bury? My geography is a little hazy but correct me if I am wrong, these towns are not OFFICIALLY Manchester Districts? I think Stockport is Cheshire (and have their own team), Middleton is Rochdale (Rochdale F.C) and Bury is Lancashire (Bury F.C) Do these towns have Manchester City supporters or supporters clubs?

  17. Brian on Fri, 21st Jan 2011 2:19 pm
  18. You really are a barrel of laughs arent ya, you dont do blogs much do you ? You can sy pretty much what you want as long its abusive. Fire away the best example you can come up with is Joey barton if there was money in Gaa it would ruin the sport as you said . There’s no money in Gaa and never will be. You in an eariler comment slagged me off as “narrow minded and typical of a fan of a rich soccer club! I put to you – I’m sure you love your big players? ” you then except for me to show you respect with your opinions ! Blogs are open to discussion and belive me it’s very rear all the city fans on here even agree. That siad your comments and way you write suggest you are infact a untied fan. As for me getting Slighty angry I don’t think so I doing this far to long to ever get angry over any comments posted on blogs. I do enjoy the responses that I get including yourself who keeps coming on to write back lol untied fan !!

  19. Romancer Of The Elderley on Fri, 21st Jan 2011 3:34 pm
  20. So your answer to “correct me if I am wrong, these towns are not OFFICIALLY Manchester Districts? I think Stockport is Cheshire (and have their own team), Middleton is Rochdale (Rochdale F.C) and Bury is Lancashire (Bury F.C) do these towns have Manchester City supporters or supporters clubs” is “lol untied fan”? You haven’t REALLY given me a straight answer have you? Since you put it ” I have been doing this far too long to ever get angry over any comments posted on blogs” ok fine I just presumed your comment of “sweet f@@k all” insinuated you was angry. My comments and “the way I write” suggest I’m a United fan? It seems to me that if you are asked a difficult question that goes against Manchester City’s locality bravado you accuse the other person of being a United fan. I have clearly asked you a question regarding locality – to which you have not answered. If you do not want to answer the question regarding locality fine don’t, just keep accusing me of being a United fan like you have 3 times already and throw insults at me like “I’m a barrel of laughs”
If you can’t honestly answer the question, I leave in peace and accept I have hit a brick wall with you….

  21. Brian on Fri, 21st Jan 2011 6:02 pm
  22. You started with the insults my friend, if you are really on here to debate the locality of Manchester and district areas that’s just sad !! To be honest it would be more fun with a untied fan because then at there’s a good chance that it would be a bit of banter and slagging on footballing matters. The article is about the Dublin OSC how to contact them and so on. You however came on to a Man City blog page and left an opening comment which was snide, which you no doubt thought was very witty.
Then again and again on a matter which is about as interesting as Gaa or train spotting, Me personally I don’t care for either.
To sum it all up for you. (yawn) bored of it now.

  24. too bad ye fucked richard dunne over!! yer captain and 1 decent player but thats shitty for ya

  25. Brian on Fri, 21st Jan 2011 9:54 pm
  26. Richard Dunne was hard done by and any city fan will tell you that, however when he went to Villa he got off with a bang scoring against City and had a great season. How many own goals has Dunny scored since he joined Villa ? Jack that said Dunne is one of the most honest and decent people you could meet as a person and as professional.

  28. Yeah, bored because the cats got ya tongue and you can’t answer the question straight. Just like my friend said, the majority of City fans are hyporcrits. And your response is “Your Sad” to a direct question regarding districts. My good friends who visit Manchester every other week are sick of fans like City’s ranting on about locality when they are clearly City fans outside Manchester! You may aswell tell the supporters who visit Eastlands who support City who are from OUTSIDE Manchester to fuck off, we only want Mancs in here.
Hipocrisy gone mad, practice what you lot preach. Soccer changed years ago, it’s about time City did….. Me too, bored now (yawn) not getting any straight answers on here….

  29. Brian on Sun, 23rd Jan 2011 7:36 pm
  30. First off,no cats not got my tounge that would mean I have nothing at all to say. Second, any more use of bad language and your comments will be deleted.
Third, if your really bored why keep posting comments ?

This subject you must take very seriously, I however don’t. I can’t say anything about local club or otherwise I’m from Dublin and I support City hardly a local lad now am I.
The local team is term used to wind up Untied fans. It’s all part of supporting a club and poking fun at your rivals. I’m sure you know it goes on in the Gaa. Between rival clubs and counties. Just like Spurs fans tell Arsenal fans their the true north London club. You are on a blog for Man City, so were hardly going to argee with your anti City comments as this blog is for City fan and the people who write it are die hard City fans !
As i said you obviously take this matter very seriously indeed. What you can do is write a piece about the matter and mail to us and if it’s written with no foul or abusive language I sure we can post it and get city fans views on it. That would mean City fans that are qualified to talk on the local matter. The post here refers to Dublin based fans which I can talk about as I am from Dublin.

I called old Trafford the swamp, I will not take that back untied fans call Eastlands “Wastelands” among other names and that’s fine as it is just part of the slagging that goes on. We all would have to be very sensitive to take offense by it. The point is lighten up a little.

  31. KM McGILL on Sun, 23rd Jan 2011 8:05 pm
  32. As far as I’m concerned, the Irish are a special case when it comes to supporting both Manchester and Liverpool clubs. The reason being that half of both these cities are populated by descendants of Irish immigrants. And the Irish have provided many players for these clubs. So for historic and geographical reasons, the Irish will always be welcome at City.

  33. Romancer Of The Elderley on Mon, 24th Jan 2011 9:49 am
  34. Oh, i’m very lit up now my freind! My apologies for the coulorful language, I will use symbols like “@%* just like you did earlier in our discussion. My comments are hardly anti-City when I’m questioning the double standards in your crowd chants. My point is proven, “The Irish are a special case” as KM McGILL has put it above and then as you put it “The local team is term used to wind up Untied fans.”
So, there you have it – it’s not TOTALLY true when the chants are sang “We support our local team” when really it should say “We support our local team but the Irish are a special case but please dont take offense if you are not local as we are only singing this to wind up untied fans.”
Lovley chatting with you my fellow IRISHMAN, this is the last you will here from me as I know have a better understanding of the chants as explained by your goodself and KM McGILL. Peace….

  40. Next season we may not win the title but we will finish above Utd. 9 points i believe this season is the gap between the rags in 1st and us in 3rd all be it joint second. On 3 occasions without question they have dived and cheated to win penalty’s and those games and i simply look at the gap and thnk they scammed their way to another title. Next season we will finish above the rags to prove we are now better than them have and caught up on your 20 year buying of titles, cups and a massive world fan base. Those foreign fans will easily change whose shirts they buy believe me.. The future is bright. The future is sky blue..
