FA Cup Or Champions League Place?

Roberto Mancini could face a tough call ahead of the FA Cup Final against Stoke City.

The blues currently occupy fourth place in the league and if they stay there, City will qualify for the Champions League. However they are only three points ahead of Spurs and the Londoners have a game in hand that could put them level on points.

And four days before the Cup Final, the two teams clash at Eastlands, leaving Mancini with an unenviable task; choose a team to claim a Champions League spot but risk them being tired for Wembley or potentially sacrifice fourth place in pursuit of silverware?

Last Monday, Mancini left out key players such as Silva, Zabaleta, De Jong and Balotelli and were comprehensively beaten at Anfield and it was clear that his mind was more focussed on the United game than the league.

But will that be the case in May and would the fans accept it if Mancini did the same for the Spurs game but won the Cup? It would help matters if Spurs lost a couple of games and gave us a little breathing space. Hopefully Arsenal will do us a favour when the visit White Hart Lane on Wednesday.

Obviously we would like to both finish fourth and win the Cup, but if it had to be one or the other, which one would you prefer?

  2. no prioritising at this stage of the season, go for broke in every game. If we get injuries, we get injuries- lord knows we’ve spent enough on players to be able to fill gaps. If Dejong and Silva had played at Liverpool, I’d be surprised if the score would have been the same but it’s immaterial now. For me we go all guns blazing in every match. The final is the most important single game between now and the end of the season so of course that’s one we all want to see us win but I’d prefer to see us try to beat teams and fail than do what we did against Liverpool and simply not put up a fight.

    Let’s av’ it.

  4. I agree with you cragsy but come the 2nd week of May, there are some tough calls to make with tactics team selection etc. It seems every game is now ours to lose with chelsea arsenal and utd a fair way above us, and tottenham 3pts below with a game in hand (with us well ahead on GD).

25/4 Rovers (A) – ‘starting’ with the best 11 and should be a comfortable win.
1/5 West Ham (H) – again, ‘starting’ with the ‘best’ 11..
7/5 Everton (A) – now things are looking trickier with regards to priorities.. but i think going for all 3pts, possibly content with 1pt depending on how the game is looking to finish,
10/5 Spurs (H) – spurs have nothing else to lose but win a CL spot, as long as we dont slip up before this point, I suspect this would be enough to maintain 4th spot.
    14/5 blue moon over wembley
    17/5 Stoke (H) – we’ll hav’em again along with the other s/finalists Bolton (A) on 22nd.

This piece probably came a fortnight too early while the city sing, but it really does provide some food for thought (cheers Pete). Seems like a question of ST gain at the expense of LT progress, and it really shouldn’t… Be equally aggressive on both fronts and I firmly believe good team management can achieve both objectives (c’mon bobby!).
