The position of left back has been a very troublesome position for Manchester city. Despite spending a large amount on Benjamin Mendy, City have still not solved their dilemma. An interesting solution to this long term problem is Bayern Munich defender David Alaba.
Here is why Manchester city should sign David Alaba
Style of play :
David Alaba has been without a doubt one of the best left backs in the world for the past 6-7 years. The Austrian has also shown his abilities by adapting seamlessly to other positions as well.
Alaba is the kind of player who can do everything for his team. He is the kind of player who knows how to read the game perfectly. He can bend in free-kicks, send dangerous crosses and sprint up and down the flanks for the whole game without breaking a sweat.
Strengths :
He is a versatile player who looks at home in nearly all of the places in his team. He can recycle possession, make darting runs, pick out his teammates in dangerous positions and make dangerous crosses into the opposition box all game long.
His previous experience with Guardiola’s system will allow him to fit in at Man City effortlessly. He already knows what Guardiola wants and is expected to be ready to perform well in every game.
Weaknesses :
David Alaba is not that good at winning aerial duels. He is also not that keen to throw in the tackles when they are required.
City’s troubles against set pieces are well documented. They would not like to add another defender to their team who cannot challenge the physical teams of the Premier League in the air.
Verdict :
David Alaba is all but certain to leave Bayern next year. He is not happy with the terms of the extension offered him and is ready to cut bait and run.
City would love to have some normalcy return to their left back position. Guardiola has had to field part time players in that position for their last two Premier league winning campaigns. Last season showed us the disadvantages of doing that against counter attacking sides.
Italian champions Juventus are currently leading the line for Alaba’s signature. However, reports out of Turin put this in doubt.
Pep Guardiola would love to be reunited with his former star. City can test Bayern’s resolve in January with a reasonable offer.
Man City were interested in bringing Alaba to the Etihad in the summer. Now, they can have the UCL winner for free next year.
