Newcastle revive interest in Manchester City goalkeeper James Trafford

Newcastle United have rekindled their interest in signing Manchester City goalkeeper James Trafford, per The Athletic’s David Ornstein. 

Newcastle endured a difficult 2025-26 campaign, as they failed to qualify for European football after finishing 12th in the Premier League. 

The Magpies have made signing a new goalkeeper one of their priorities after identifying the position as a weakness. 

They have revived interest in Trafford after failing to secure his signature last summer. 

The 23-year-old, who came through Man City’s youth system, returned to the Etihad Stadium after the club activated their buy-back clause in the previous transfer window. 

Trafford expected to be the Citizens’ first choice goalkeeper, but the club then brought in Gianluigi Donnarumma as their main stopper. 

The English footballer made 17 appearances across all competitions, starting just four Premier League games. 

Trafford wants regular minutes and could push for a move away from City this summer. 

Although he wants to hold off making a decision about his future until returning from the World Cup. 

Trafford is contracted with City until 2030, but they could cash in on him this summer. 

Donnarumma enjoyed a solid first season at the Etihad Stadium, keeping 15 clean sheets in 34 Premier League appearances. 

Man City have no reason to change the 27-year-old’s status as the club’s first choice. 

A summer exit makes sense for Trafford, as his situation looks unlikely to change next season.
