Manchester City return to Champions League action on Tuesday evening as they take a trip to Denmark to face Copenhagen in the first-leg of the round of 16.
The Citizens finished at the top of Group G after winning all six matches, while opponents on Tuesday advanced to the knockouts after sneaking into second place behind Bayern Munich.
Match Preview
With Manchester United and Bayern in the group, Copenhagen looked to have no chance of making it to the Champions League round of 16.
However, a series of remarkable performances ensured the Danish outfit qualify for the knockout stages for only the second time in their history.
Jacob Neestrup’s side picked up only one point from their first three group matches before stunning United with a 4-3 victory at the Parken Stadium.
Following a creditable goalless draw at Bayern Munich, Copenhagen edged Galatasaray 1-0 in their final match to book a place in the last 16 of the European competition.
However, they now face a daunting challenge with Manchester City as their next opponents on Tuesday.
Pep Guardiola’s side have hit a spectacular run of form following their struggles in November and December.
The Citizen’s 2-0 success over Everton on Saturday was their 10th consecutive win in all competitions, with the result briefly taking them to the top of the league table before Liverpool’s victory over Burnley.
City are in contention for the Premier League title this campaign, but they are also favourites for defending their Champions League crown.
The English giants strolled into the round of 16 after picking up all 18 points to top their group.
Team News
Copenhagen midfielder Lerager scored the important goal against Galatasaray in December but the 30-year-old will be missing Tuesday’s clash through suspension. Joining him on the sidelines will be Davit Khocholava and Theo Sander due to injuries.
As for Manchester City, there are no notable absentees either through suspension or injury. Erling Haaland, who scored both goals against Everton last time out, should lead their frontline, while Kevin De Bruyne and Bernardo Silva should also start.
